Lawns need dethatching when the thatch layer is over 1.5cm deep. Thatch is dead and living organic matter that is sandwiched between the grass blades and soil. In established lawns, this layer can look like a tangled mat atop the soil. Although it does help insulate a lawn during the winter and retain moisture, it can also become a breeding ground for pests or make fertilising difficult when it is overgrown.
